Crane & Company

In 1801, a family tradition of innovation and excellence in papermaking began when Zenas Crane established a paper mill in Dalton, Massachusetts, USA. In 2001, Crane & Co. celebrated its 200th year as a manufacturer of quality cotton papers.

One of Crane & Co.’s early patents, issued in 1844, was for denominating banknotes by embedding parallel silk security threads in the paper. This innovative banknote paper was soon in wide use, and helped to position Crane & Co. as a supplier for U.S. Currency paper in 1879.

Over its long history, Crane & Co. has continued to refine its manufacturing processes for the production of high-quality, specialized cotton papers, developing a broad diversity of papers for a wide variety of demanding applications. In addition to paper making expertise, Crane & Co. is distinguished by its leadership in the development of currency technology and security features.

In January of 2002, Crane & Co. acquired AB Tumba Bruk, Tumba, Sweden, paper maker and printer of banknotes and high security documents since 1755. LEONHARD KURZ GmbH & Co. KG is a family owned company established about 100 years ago. From its beginning as a gold foil producer, it is today a leading manufacturer in the world of security hotstamping foils.

KURZ established its presence in the U.S. by the take over of the Hastings company in 1972. KURZ expanded its business by the foundation of KURZ Transfer Products L.P. in Charlotte, N.C. as sales office and manufacturing plant for security products.

Oesterreichische Banknoten- und Sicherheitsdruck GmbH (OeBS)

Founded in 1816 as part of the „Privilegierte Oesterreichische Nationalbank”, the department was converted into the Oesterreichische Banknoten- und Sicherheitsdruck GmbH - a limited company completely owned by the Oesterreichische Nationalbank – in 1998.

Today, the OeBS group operates globally in the following fields: banknote and securities printing for central bank customers, detectors for high security features and solutions for banknote sorting systems. Moreover the OeBS also aims to provide products and services, which efficiently meet the needs of banknote printers and of organizations involved in the processing of banknotes in circulation. Particular consideration is given to the observation of strict environmental standards through the use of state-of-the-art technology.
