Crane & Company

In 1801, a family tradition of innovation and excellence in papermaking began when Zenas Crane established a paper mill in Dalton, Massachusetts, USA. In 2001, Crane & Co. celebrated its 200th year as a manufacturer of quality cotton papers.

One of Crane & Co.’s early patents, issued in 1844, was for denominating banknotes by embedding parallel silk security threads in the paper. This innovative banknote paper was soon in wide use, and helped to position Crane & Co. as a supplier for U.S. Currency paper in 1879.

Over its long history, Crane & Co. has continued to refine its manufacturing processes for the production of high-quality, specialized cotton papers, developing a broad diversity of papers for a wide variety of demanding applications. In addition to paper making expertise, Crane & Co. is distinguished by its leadership in the development of currency technology and security features.

In January of 2002, Crane & Co. acquired AB Tumba Bruk, Tumba, Sweden, paper maker and printer of banknotes and high security documents since 1755. Kurz Transfer Products L.P. and Kurz Hastings Philadelphia, the U.S.branches of the Kurz Group, were founded in 1820 by the Hastings family as gold leaf manufacturers. In 1972 John V.
